Surry Hills Festival This Weekend

Sep 25, 2014  ·  2 min read

By Benjamen Judd

It’s here – Sydney’s ultimate open-air community get together, the Surry Hills Festival, and it’s happening this weekend on Saturday, September 27 and will take place throughout the backstreets and parks of our beloved borough.

Since it’s beginnings, the Surry Hills Festival has highlighted the importance of cultural interactivity in community. Bringing together the talents of local designers, artists, musicians the festival is a unique collaboration of creativity.

Designer markets, food stalls, fashion both new and vintage plus gallery walks will be taking place against the backing sounds of live bands performing across three separate stages, Shannon Reserve, Ward Park and arts hub The Velvet Cave. You can even take part in a Bot workshop and create your own digital story. Or simply sit back and watch the dogs (which is pretty much the only reason we ever leave the house).

Most importantly, while the festival is free, there is also a charitable cause behind it. Funds raised through Surry Hills Festival sponsors, partners, volunteers and donations on event day go to community programs of SHNC. In particular, services for people with low income and marginalised groups such as elderly people, people who are homeless, people with mental illness and people from culturally or linguistically diverse backgrounds. SHNC hosts family and community programs including children’s activities, art, film, dance, performance and cooking programs for all ages. Our facilities provide access for community members to get together and share experiences through sad and good times. Please give generously!

The Surry Hills Festival will take place on Saturday, September 27.
