In case you haven’t already, now is the last chance to get yourself down to the Lyric Theatre and witness the camp glittering all dancing sensation that is Strictly Ballroom: The Musical.
Based on the 90s film of the same name, Strictly Ballroom is a fabulous mashup of a clash of Australian humour, multiculturalism and the cut-throat competitiveness that is the ballroom dancing scene (Sophie Ellis Bexter’s Murder on the Dance Floor clip was truer to life than most people realise).
This uplifting and courageous tale originally started as a stage play that director Baz Luhrmann devised with a group of other students at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in 1984, before it was later turned into the award winning feature film so it’s rather fitting that the story should return to its origins back on the stage. The production features some of the classic songs from the film, such as Love Is In The Air (obvs) but also a slew of new ones too, and original pieces from artists such as Eddie Perfect (aka Mick Holland from Offspring) and the untouchable chanteuse, Sia.
Tickets are becoming limited as the show wraps up its final performance on Sunday July 6. Grab a friend, hell go by yourself even, but just don’t miss out one of the best nights you’ll have all year.
Strictly Ballroom: The Musical is playing at the Lyric Theatre until Sunday, July 6.
