Serpent And the Swan Just Made Winter Even Longer

This year’s Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia in Sydney was collection of pleasant surprises but none more so than our very Sydney-based sister-team, Serpent and the Swan.

A long time favourite of the crew here at QT, Serpent and the Swan have gained a reputation for creating gender-ambivalent clothing that defies current trends to instead focus on unique patterns, cuts and a rather risqué ensembles. And their runway collection for Spring Summer 14/15 didn’t disappoint because not only did they rock the runway with one of the best collections of the week but they also had us thinking that El Nino may not be such a bad thing after all if it meant we were able to wear their threads during winter…

While retaining their signature nightmare-inspired hardware and ever-present leather (we will never be tired of leather so keep it coming), the latest collection, which was dubbed “the Bronze Age”, found its inspiration in ancient myth and rituals. Leather-detailed overalls and tees add a touch of neo-barbarism and offset the surprisingly delicate print serpentine placement print created by musician Annie Hamilton of Australian band Little May.

Subtle pentagram cut out details feature in the collection alongside high neck perforated neoprene and metallic tops and bombers and silk slip dresses and culottes. Trademark sheer and leather pieces are also still on high rotation. Combined with a selection of traditional silk and leather kimonos that are basically begging to become part of our wardrobe.

Also featured in the collection was a collaborative jewellery range specifically created for the runway by LA based jeweller Luv AJ.

Thank you, Serpent and the Swan, for reminding us that not all Australian fashion is surf and turf and that there is still room for gothic glamour.
