In this ‘exhibition without a theme’ it’s over to you, the audience, to discover the common thread. Mitch Cairns, Susan Jacobs and Tim Silver recently initiated this selection of their new work at Breenspace – mostly generated from six months of real life and email conversations between the trio. Cairns, whose self-portrait recently made the finals of the Archibald Prize, will show a series of paintings. In addition to some of his characteristic yellow and blue strangely familiar abstractions, the series entitled Convent Wall wryly exploits the misinterpretation of text.


For her contribution, Jacobs responds to the architectural environment of the Gallery. The physical and psychological aspects of space have been a common theme in her practice. Here Jacobs has developed a floor to ceiling steel sculptural installation that ‘guards’ the entrance. After shifting scale, other pieces include three ‘sliced’ bowling balls that mimic hemispheres and a series of building materials, animal bones and magnetic forces designed to encourage looking and challenge the viewer’s comprehension. Silver’s approach to this show further develops his interest in transformation and the passing of time by considering the casting process using a range of mundane objects such as the severed knob of a tree, a mutated succulent and a found rock.
