TIM SCHULTZ AT THE COMMERCIAL

If you find yourself with some free time and a desire to expand your creative horizons, take a hike slightly westward to The Commercial in Redfern this coming Friday 14 March for the opening of the second solo-show, Ornamental Perversion, from awesome Sydney-based artist, Tim Schultz.
Since his early days of breaking in to the Australian art scene, Schultz has been known for his eclectic approach to painting. Constantly shifting stylistically within his own unmistakable and inimitable signature, Schultz has made a career paying homage to particular outmoded painters of, for example, the French Rococo, the Baroque, Art Nouveau and Surrealism. Two artists feature prominently in this scenario: François Boucher (1703-1770) and Salvador Dali (1904–1989). Boucher and Dali are the cardinal points in Schultz’s practice between the sweet and the sinister, the conscious and the unconscious, an abundant and buoyant  substance and one that sinks and drains away through gates to the dark crypt.

On the outset, the work is a colourful foray into the more phantasmagoric representations of dreams and beauty but it is only on closer inspection that one sees the sinister nature of each element. The work highlights how quickly dreams can slip in to nightmares and how beauty can often be a source of fear.

Cost of the event is free but get in quick to snag yourself a welcome wine and beer. The art is also available for sale so have your wallets handy to make an investment in to your cultural capital.

The Commercial gallery is located at 148 Abercrombie Street, Redfern.
