PSY #QTstyle

Jan 24, 2013  ·  2 min read

PSY is a global online phenomenon. Yes, you might think that we are overstating the obvious with that statement, but what makes it so incredible it the ‘global’ part of the description. In a song where the only English language phrase is ‘hey sexy ladies’, and the rest is sung in Korean, it’s a true testament to the power of the internet and its unprecedented ability to bridge cultural divides.

Let’s be real about it. The song is not what gets you. Maybe it’s the dance? Maybe it’s the fact that tens of millions of people had sat and watched it online prior to you hearing about it, and so you ‘knew’ it must be worth the 6 odd minutes that we all spent out of our very busy days watching this guy bounce around the screen.

Gangnam Style refers to the bling that is seen in one of the most wealthy parts of Korea, in a country where the distribution of wealth is very top heavy (to say the least). It’s a fun song, with an aspirational (and sad) message about society. PSY has ridden it all the way to the bank!

So, when we had the pleasure of his company in Gilt Bar and Gowings Bar and Grill at QT Sydney, we knew that we had hit the big time #QTstyle, because why would such an aspirational entertainer come and visit unless we were the Aussie version of Gangnam Style!
