Even if he wasn’t such an amazing musician, we’d probably go see Mat McHugh at the Vanguard just for his hunkability factor alone. But thankfully, he IS such an amazing musician so when we are front and centre on Wednesday, April 23, it will be to bask in the talented essence of this triple threat.
Since kicking off a career destined for great things back in 2008 (he was part of Triple J darlings, The Beautiful Girls), McHugh has continued to walk to the strum of his own guitar.
This year has seen Mat kick off the year with the dancehall and dub influenced More Money, “part of the continuum” from his self-penned and home-recorded Spooks album. Along with the ragga grooves there is a message for our times that sits with McHugh’s long held independent, self-reliant ethos and “hippie idealism”.
In addition to performing songs he wrote and recorded with The Beautiful Girls plus songs from his solo albums, Mat will also be previewing songs from the album he will commence recording in April including his current release, More Money. On stage in a mixture of acoustic and electric modes, Mat will be joined by longtime friend, producer and sometime member of The Beautiful Girls, Ian Pritchett.
Mat McHugh will perform at The Vanguard Wednesday, April 23.
