Where do you find some cute things for kids (that may or may not be your own), some skeleton monkey bone mobiles, and white shirts that double as a semi-straitjacket? Aly Peel and her label Maiike, naturally.
Based in Melbourne, Aly kicked off her brand back in 1999 and, after some commercial success, decided to step back, relax and rethink the direction of the label. And she was dearly missed.
But she’s back and is now back designing not only beautiful women’s clothing but also a limited children’s range and plush toys! Aly has relaunched the label as a much more haptic, touchable range. Materials are selected for their feel against the skin. The Maiike plush toys and quilts are all re-born from woollen knits carefully found at secondhand shops. The toys have metamorphosed into many shapes and quilts into various sizes and finishings. The homewares are also made from recycled jumpers which are then cut down into squares and sewn together, making lovely and warm memory blankets.
Aly does do custom orders, working to colours and sizes of your choice. These can be as zany as you like or as traditional as you please.
For more information on Maiike and what Aly can do, head to her website.
