Knotty Business

Jun 27, 2012  ·  2 min read

It was cute while it lasted, but it’s time for the bow-tie to take its place in the annals of men’s fashion and retire to the necks of literature academics and attendees of the opera. Yes, it has been part of many a favourite ensemble – it added that quirky edge to your favourite shirt/blazer/chino combination. It was the very reason you had a favourite shirt/blazer/chino combination!

Thank you bow-tie, it has been swell. But it’s time to join the big-boys league and that calls for something that has a little more authority and carries with it the history of the working man. Welcome back, the humble tie.

Once considered the domain of corporate sharks and private schools, the tie is something that can be relied upon to sharpen up the most casual outfit. There are a few rules that need to be taken into consideration, however, in the art of wearing a tie…

  1. Number one – No cartoon ties. No themed ties. Stick to a solid colour that compliments your outfit. This is a serious business.
  2. Number two – The tip of the tie should hit right at the beltline.
  3. Number three – No wide loads. Your tie should be two and half inches wide.
  4. And finally, number four – The knot. Don’t be afraid to YouTube. In fact, we’ve done it for you. Here.
