Just in Time for Winter – The Scandinavian Film Festival

We’ve got a pretty good deal when it comes to winter here in Sydney. Rarely dropping below a balmy ten degrees, it’s hard to think that other places like, say, Scandinavian countries, deal with blistering snows and almost zero sunlight. But you can at least experience it second hand at the Scandinavian Film Festival this July 9-27 at the Palace Cinemas in Paddington and Leichardt.

Known for their gifted narratives of the uncanny and subtle horror (or not so subtle, if you have ever seen Let The Right One In), the Scandinavian regions have a rich tradition of auteurs and story telling. Indeed, the region has produced some of the most iconic films ever made. From the masterpieces of Ingmar Bergman, to the radical, back-to-basics guerrilla-style filmmaking of the Dogme revolution, to the contemporary and transnational diversity of Nordic cinema, Palace is proud to present local audiences with a brand new event, created to offer a dedicated focus to an area of screen culture that has for too long been under-represented in Australia.

The mission statement of the inaugural Scandinavian Film Festival is to ensure that more films from the region are presented where they deserve to be seen: on the big screen. Too often some extraordinary films have never seen the light of day here (or rather, the darkness of a cinema), and Palace considers it an honour and a privilege to help correct this.

Tickets to films will go quickly as spaces are, obviously, very limited. We recommend getting in quick and making sure you don’t miss out on the chance to see some of the most gifted artists of our time in their natural habitat – the silver screen.

The Scandinavian Film Festival will be held from July 9-27 at Palace Cinemas in Paddington and Leichardt.
