JUMPING ON HISTORY

Jan 7, 2014  ·  2 min read

By Benjamen Judd

We love history. Better yet, we love history that we can touch, jump and basically throw our bodies against in reckless, childish abandon and bounce right back off without a single broken bone. Which is why we are busting our nuts to get a chance to go on the Sacrilege installation during the Sydney Festival this month.

Based upon the iconic imagery of Britain’s Stonehenge, Sacrilege is a timeless monument treated to an irreverent modern makeover. Located in Hyde Park (the North End) this is every big kids and fantasy nerd’s dream – the opportunity to jump on Stonehenge.

Having baffled historians for centuries, Stonehenge is reimagined as a life-size inflatable castle– with everyone invited to have a bounce.

This new work by Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller has become a contemporary art feel-good hit.
A cheeky, family friendly collision of history and art, Sacrilege is a chance for aspiring Druids of all ages to play with the past (just be sure to take your shoes off).

What can we say – we are big kids at heart and the opportunity to throw off the shackles of adulthood is too good to pass up. Particularly when it’s semi-educational in a whopping great big toy kind of way.

Sacrilege is closed Mondays.
