Fashion mistress and all-round queen of Australian design, the wonderful Jenny Kee, has launched her own e-commerce site where she is making available to the masses her pure silk crepe de chine, individually printed, limited-edition, totally Australian-made scarves. You’re unaustralian if you don’t have one.
Jenny Kee has been an icon within the fashion industry for more than forty years. Her social history is almost as colourful as her clothing, including runways and parties and infamous gay steam rooms in Sydney and a fixture on the fringe art scene (a history that has been informally captured by the incredible photos of William Yang). Now, her eponymous website takes all her passion for Australia’s unique ecology and her love for design to showcase her range of hand-made scarves “The Art of the Scarf”.
The silk scarf is Kee’s way of allowing art to be worn on the body, favoured for the material’s fluidity, movement and grace. Influenced by Australian Indigenous art, tribal cultures and symbols, for Kee, each print shares a personal narrative. Interlinking these symbols and images across various mediums – oil crayons, acrylic, watercolours and Asian inks – one scarf can be constructed from 30 original artworks, all from the hand of Jenny Kee.
To see Kee’s collection and to buy your own wearable artwork, head to her website here.
