Dreamy girl-folk music is continually under rated in favour of skinny bearded boys (thanks mainstream media) so we relish the opportunity to talk about bands that are not only all girl but all talented. As is the story for Sydney-based group, Little May, who are playing the Vanguard this coming Thursday, August 8.
Little May remind us of the girls from the Virgin Suicides – just without all the suicides and religious nutter mother but with all the dreamery, good hair and disarming charm in tact.
Forming mid 2012, Little May consists of Hannah Field, Liz Drummond and Annie Hamilton, three friends whose mutual love for music and songwriting brought them together years after leaving school. The girls’ inspiration is a diverse selection of iconic sounds such as Fleetwood Mac, Mumford & Sons and Local Natives, with a none-too-subtle nod to the fem-folk trailblazers such as Julia Stone and Holly Throsby.
As self-taught musicians, the girls rely purely on instinct when writing music. This honesty and vulnerability shines through lyrically and comes across in the girl’s performances. Recently playing at The Secret Garden Festival 2013 and the Australian Music Prize PRE-AMP function, the girls have received a reputation for capturing audiences with defining harmonies, guitar driven melodies and skillful songwriting.
2013 will see the release of Little May’s debut EP, a collection of songs of love, lust, and heartbreak, beginning with Boardwalks, the first single, which is being launched at The Leadbelly (formerly the Vanguard) Sydney on Thursday August 8.
