GIDDY UP FOR FINGERS

Jul 12, 2013  ·  2 min read

By Benjamen Judd

We recently watched a documentary on the indomitable Karl Lagerfeld. Dude likes him some rings! We found the whole thing very inspiring. So much so that we started to find some of our finger-blings that we could pile on.

Momoko Hatano is a Japanese born and Sydney raised visual artist and specialist jewellery designer / maker.

After graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the College of Fine Arts in Paddington, Momoko began working for a Sydney based jewellery design company where she explored metal working and silver smithing processes. Already trained as an artist, jewellery making immediately felt natural. These experiences lead her to merge her interest in art and design to create her own jewellery label, which is lucky because horse-y fingers are awesome fingers.

Drawing inspiration from kitsch aesthetics, found objects from her travels, contemporary art and her passion for hip-hop and Erykah Badu, Momoko designs and handcrafts her collections in her Darlinghurst studio using Australian sourced and recycled silver.

What really blew our mind was her Equus collection.  A range of rings masterfully molded from sterling silver and pink bronze, each piece has a perfect miniature of a horses head thrusting out from the base of the ring. Despite their delicate features, these are far from cute. We’d also recommend thinking twice before you go to sucker-punch someone while you wear them. We intend on getting one for each finger and have a personal herd.
