It’s quite often those designers that sit at the fringe of the industry that deserve most of our attention. Innovative, aesthetically pure and focus on quality tends to be found in those brands that, rather than focus on mass, place more importance on garment as a creative and even artistic endeavour.
And such is the case for Australian-born, Paris-based brand, Song For the Mute. Designers, Lyna Ty and Melvin Tanaya, have gained a cult following back here in Australia for their noir, neo-gothic clothing range. They became infamous in 2011 for being the first Australian-based label to be picked up by exclusive high-end men’s store, Harrolds. Now, the duo have released their latest selection of clothing for Spring Summer and we must say, it looks as deliciously dark as we had hoped.
Called ‘Ciel’, the Spring Summer 2014 collection is a range of unstructured, loose-fitted pants and shirts with some intriguing knitted shorts thrown in to the mix. Maintaining their distinct disregard for the need of colour (we hear you SFtM, we hear you), the palette is a mixture of black, beige and a thousand shades of grey. Perfect way to blend in to the concrete landscape and a nice change from the nauseating need some labels have for pastels the minute there is a hint of sunshine.
