This year’s 19th Biennale of Sydney has been plagued with controversy that unfortunately overshadowed a lot of the great work presented by local and international artists. This will be your last week to get a view of some of these and we recommend taking a hike down to Carriageworks in Eveleigh to check out a collection of stunning video works on display there.
This year saw Carriageworks take part as a Major Venue Partner for the Biennale for the first time. Their contribution to the festival includes a series of major works exploring the language, materials and narratives of the theatre and film worlds from which contemporary artists take inspiration for reinvention. Artists will include Broersen & Lukács, Joost Conijn, Henry Coombes, Nir Evron, Søren Thilo Funder, Bodil Furu, Ane Hjort Guttu, Hadley+Maxwell, Siri Hermansen, Agnieszka Kalinowska, Gabriel Lester, Norman Leto, Ann Lislegaard, Renzo Martens, Daniel McKewen, Laurent Montaron, Tinka Pittoors, Mathias Poledna, Ann-Sofi Sidén and Jonathan Bepler, Charlie Sofo, and Anna Touri.
Carriageworks and the Biennale of Sydney will also co-present the world premiere of a new work by celebrated British artist Tacita Dean. Dean emerged in London in the 1990s as part of the prominent generation of Young British Artists, with work that stood out for its formal elegance and intellectual rigour. She was nominated for the Turner Prize in 1998, and her work has been shown at institutions worldwide, including New York’s New Museum and Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum; Tate Modern, London; Schaulager, Basel; and Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid.
The 19th Biennale of Sydney: Imagine What You Desire is taking place now across Sydney and will wrap up on Monday June 9.
