We’re not ashamed to admit that we like things that are a little exclusive. Not elitist, mind you, just a little unknown to the masses and has a certain cultural clout. So we love Melbourne based label, Ess. Laboratory.
Originally from Japan, Ess. Laboratory was started in 2001 by the very talented Hoshika Oshimi and her collaborative partner, Tatsuyoshi Kawabata. Both take pride in producing designs that invoke a mixture of reality and illusion, creating garments often extend the body, lengthening limbs whilst at the same time having a wonderful sense of volume.
There is a rather Victorian edge to their aesthetic (and we mean time period, not the state). Collars, ruffles and slightly darker shades predominate throughout the collections. In fact, old kind of a buzzword for the brand – rings look like they have been dug up from sulfuric earth, vests and jackets from the 19th Century and passed down some landed gentry family in wooden cases. They’re the kind of clothes that make every day a fashionably interesting one.
Ess. Laboratory pride themselves on avoiding any kind of commercialization of their work, which also includes stocking their wares in many stores. But, and thank spaghetti and ice-cream for the interwebs, they do have an online store that ships all over Australia. For more information, and to buy their collections online, head to the Ess. Laboratory website here.
