Courtesy of the Artist, or COTA, has become one of our favourite places to hang whenever we are in need of a creative design fix. A combination of gallery (located in Surry Hills) a retail store (located in the Strand Arcade), and online magazine, COTA describes itself as a “compendium of stories and visual insights which shine a light on creative individuals and their studio practice. With a focus on innovation, style and provenance, COTA reveals a glimpse into the creative lives of artists, designers and makers with a shared passion for the handmade.”
Since it’s launch, COTA has provided an in-depth look at objects as art, ranging from shirt construction, jewellery design and homewares. Each exhibition is impeccably curated not only for their aesthetic appeal but also for the philosophy and concepts that the designer takes on board.
This coming December, the designer de jour is Japanese jewellery designer Kaoru Rogers. Called Paper, Wire, Rock the exhibition presents a playful approach to jewellery making. In this body of work, Kaoru has created minimal, whimsical forms that reference the language, concepts and materials from two countries she calls home – Australia and Japan.
Paper, Wire, Rock is an evolving display of Kaoru’s process and style.
For more information about the concepts behind Kaoru’s work visit the COTA website here.
Paper, Wire, Rock opens on Wednesday 4th December 2013 between 6pm – 8pm at COTA gallery, 10b Fitzroy Place Surry Hills. The exhibition runs until December 21st 2013.
