CHRISTMAS IN THE CITY

By Benjamen Judd

Everybody loves Christmas. And by everyone we mean all the lovely folk that actually enjoy sitting around in stifling heat eating their own body weight in food and passing out by 3pm. Then there are the rest of us who, either through distance or insistence, find themselves with nothing but spare time on Christmas Day because everyone has gone their different ways. And it is bliss. Quiet, gentle, solitary bliss. So, we thought we might give you a few tips on how to spend that bliss while you are in Sydney, just in case you get a little bored.

MOVIES

Movies on Christmas Day seems to be a tradition amongst a lot of us. Especially those who don’t celebrate Christmas for whatever reason or just can’t handle the drama. Literally a five minute walk down the road, the Event Cinemas on George Street will be open from lunchtime and your Christmas Day selections are looking particularly sweet. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Thor: The Dark World, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and the one we’re all busting nuts to see, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues are all showing…so basically, just get yourself a bundle of tickets, some popcorn and settle in with Santa!

TARONGA ZOO

So you’re eating food for one in one of heaven-level of comfort rooms and you decide you need to explore. Where to go? Sydney’s iconic Taronga Zoo is open all day on Christmas and if there is anything that we love more than spending time with people it’s spending time with animals. In fact, we’d rather spend time with animals any day. Ferries will run at an alternative timetable so make sure you check before you head out.

WAYSIDE CHAPEL CHRISTMAS DAY STREET PARTY

Last but not least, here is an opportunity to feed your soul. The annual Wayside Chapel Christmas Street Party will kick off at 930am at their Hughes Street location in Potts Point. While the opportunity to volunteer has shut down, you can still attend services and donate. Or you could head down for a sausage sizzle and meet the real people of the city.

Merry Christmas from all of us here at the QT!
