In the spirit of celebrating all things artistic and creative, we are more than pleased to say we are blown away by the latest exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Circular Quay. Showing until October 26, French artist Annette Messager’s Motion/Emotion is not to be missed.
Feminist, critic, activist and multi-disciplinary artist, Annette Messager’s career spans across forty years. Motion/Emotion is a retrospective of Messager’s work curated by Rachel Kent which includes unpacks around 30 works including a collection of 81 black-and-white photographs titled The Voluntary Tortures (1972), depicting women undergoing various cosmetic procedures, and a more recently completed textile sculpture of two guns, which will be debuting in this exhibition.
Featuring works from the early 1970s to the present, this represents the artist’s first retrospective exhibition in Australia and includes her large kinetic installations with mechanical and inflatable elements.
At once playful and disturbing, Messager’s works employ everyday materials and objects in their realisation, from woollen gloves and items of clothing, to black netting, soft toys and badges.
Annette Messager’s Motion/Emotion is showing at the Museum of Contemporary Art from July 24 until October 26.
