We are going to promote some genuine culture. Not that all the other events or artistic expressions aren’t cultural, but this time we’re talking about something that is genuinely cultural.
We’re talking about going to see Frankenstein. A new, reimagined version of the classic metaphor of man’s relationship with god and modernity…we know, we can’t believe we wrote that just then either. But we did. Presented by Ensemble Theatre, Frankenstein will be showing at the Sydney Opera House this month, specifically in the Playhouse, starting on Wednesday 27th March and will run until Saturday 13th of April.
Frankenstein has been one of those stories that has been re-adapted so many times that the original themes often get lost in the midst of interpretation. Not so with the work by director Nick Dear, who has managed to stick to the grim reality of the original story whilst still managing to make it fresh and new for the stage.
To give you a taste of how the play will occur, this is an excerpt from the playbill:
“The Creature is cast out by his creator, the young doctor Frankenstein, and unleashed upon the world. He is shunned for his grotesque appearance and spurned by society wherever he goes. When a blind man takes Frankenstein’s monstrous creation under his wing and educates him, the Creature begins to question his existence and to yearn for a future without loneliness. His search for a lifelong partner brings him back to his maker, with vengeance foremost in his mind.”
