A New Dawn

Oct 9, 2012  ·  2 min read

A New Dawn Don’t worry, that wasn’t a Twilight reference. It was, however, a reference to a lovely Canadian baker turned ceramicist named Dawn Vachon.

Based in Melbourne, Dawn moved to Australia from her native Canada after finishing her Bachelor in Visual Arts in 2008. After a couple of years soaking up the southern sights, she then scored a residency at Incinerator Arts Complex in Moonee Ponds which only wrapped up last year in June.

Since then, Dawn has been busily making a range of cups, bowls, dishes and all manner of things ceramics. Working either by hand or on wheel, her creations all have the same thick earthy feel to them. They are also decorated by hand by Dawn herself, using her own distinct, signature aesthetics that remind us a little of those vintage mugs you might find at your favourite great-nanna’s house. The trick is the flecked, stoneware clay that she shapes her lovely collections from.

Dawn also has a little blog where she posts her creations and collaborations plus bits of inspiring news that carry her throughout the day. We like it because we get to drool over all the lovely things we want to buy for our own homes. Plus, she also adds some super sweet anecdotes about her work and her life that are just as lovely as her coffee mugs.

For more information, and see Dawn’s collections, visit her blog here.
