The National Museum of Australia | What’s On

Apr 7, 2016  ·  2 min read

By Jemma Mrdak.

The National Museum of Australia is a social history museum, located in the heart of Canberra. It explores the land, nationality and people of Australia with a focus on Indigenous histories and cultures, histories of European settlement and our interaction with the environment.

The National Museum of Australia opened in 2001 and is an architectural landmark. Inspired by the idea of a jigsaw puzzle, the external design reflects the many intertwined stories that make up Australia’s history.

There are a variety of exhibitions currently on display at the National Museum of Australia.

Kaninjaku: Stories from the Canning Stock Route

Kaninjaku is on show until August and is an exhibition of 116 paintings, sculptural works, contemporary cultural objects, documentary material and oral histories by 60 artists who travelled along the Canning Stock Route. This route is a track that was developed on Aboriginal homelands as mining and pastoral industries expanded in Western Australia.

Lag Meta Aus

This exhibition reveals the history of Australia’s top end and northerly region, the Torres Strait. The words ‘lag’, ‘meta’ and ‘aus’ translate to ‘home’ in the region’s three Indigenous languages. This exhibition features artworks, subjects and objects that reflect the Strait’s history and culture from the past to the present.

Landmarks: People and Places across Australia

This is a permanent exhibition at the National Museum that explores a broad history of Australia through stories of places and their peoples. Landmarks consists of 10 themes in Australian life, exploring how each has unfolded in particular places across the country. It takes a look at the evolving flora, fauna and technologies that have developed over time.
