If you are looking for a different approach to site seeing, why not head down to M16 Art Space where a collection of young Canberra-based artists have come together until July 6 to revive the sacred act of walking in their interactive exhibition, Wanderlust.
Wanderlust brings together eleven emerging and early career artists from Canberra who each engages with the act of ‘walking’. Walking being an interaction where the mind, body and environment align. Many of the artists in this exhibition use walking as an inspiration, and investigate their own personal experiences in their work. Some make observations about walkers or the act of walking itself, as a social, environmental and political activity. Across painting, drawing, and less traditional media, these artists explore this everyday activity.
The act of walking has become a lost art. And walking is an art – the French flâneur, the songlines of Indigenous Australians and even the traditional pilgrimage. That ability to meander lovingly throughout a city without the urge to rush or to actually get somewhere. Many poets, artists and thinkers used walking as a method of thinking and exploring their ideas.
The exhibition looks at walking as it happens in various scenarios – along the busy streets, within crowded commercial spaces and even the gentle stroll that one takes while in a gallery, looking at the exhibition itself. This is a fantastic and fascinating show that really looks at a core human behaviour that we so often take for granted.
Wanderlust is now showing at M16 Art Space until July 6.
