Reko Rennie for Colab Eyewear

Spring is here, which means that summer is only around the corner. So what better way to celebrate the return of beaches and weekend BBQs than treating yourself to the latest collaboration eyewear from Sydney-based label Colab’s and Melbourne-based artist Reko Rennie.

Known for their adventurous mash-ups with various designers and creatives, owning a pair of Colab eyewear is like having your own wearable art. Anthony Lister, Perks and Mini (P.A.M), Brett Chan and local jewellery designer Elkie Kramer are just some of the talents that have come on board to mark a new season of unique sunglasses.

This Spring’s collaboration, however, is, dare we say, probably our favourite one yet. Reko Rennie is a Melbourne-based interdisciplinary artist who uses his work to explore his Aboriginal identity. Rennie’s art incorporates his association to the Kamilaroi people, using traditional geometric patterning that represents his community. Through his art, Rennie provokes discussion surrounding Indigenous culture and identity in contemporary urban environments.

Rennie’s range of eyewear with Colab comes in three ‘shades’ (pun!). There is 4Eva, which utilizes Rennie’s distinct diamond pattern that represents his personal family crest for the Kamilaroi peoples.

Mila is dedicated to Rennie’s own daughter, with dreamlike colours and sandblasted pattern detailing, inspired by the workings of the higher consciousness.

O.A (Original Aboriginal) finishes the set and features symbols found in Reko’s own personal work. A diamond and crown – a symbol of sovereignty and a nod to American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, also work as a reference to Reko’s own roots in street art.
