This winter has been a particularly cold one for Canberra.
Practically 50% of conversations around the water cooler, with the taxi driver and the barista centre around how this winter is surely colder than the last.
Proclaiming to those from the Northern states “It was minus eight here last night!” while feeling particularly smug that we are from such tough stock.
We are weather obsessed when it comes to the cold yet it can be easy to take for granted the comforts of a warm house and cosy bed after a long day.
Though not all Canberran’s have access to a warm shower, cosy clothing or adequate shelter to cope with the winter months.
In fact, up to 2000 people are homeless each night in the ACT and statistics show at least half of these are women.
These figures include those sleeping in the street, plus the invisible homeless – those in temporary accommodation, community housing and crisis refugees.
With the temps due to chill before the summer heat waves take over, you might be thinking how you can help out those in need?
Thankfully, two of our favourite boutiques, Rebel Muse and Pink Ink, have partnered on Pink’s Rebel Cause, an initiative to help women in need in the ACT.
The idea is simple: they are asking clients, business networks and the broader women’s community to donate a warm, clean, quality coat. These will be delivered to women in need via established social services. Each garment will have feminine hygiene products placed in the pockets.
For this, Pink and Rebel Muse are offering a $50 voucher for each donation, redeemable against new season collections. Jackets and items for donation can be delivered from now until August 13, to Pink Ink and Rebel Muse, both on Lonsdale Street in Braddon.
Check out Rebel Muse here and Pink Ink here.
