Most of us might remember the mind-twisting gender-bending amazingness that is A Midsummer Night’s Dream from their high school days. There was lust, there was drugs, there was faeries – it was better than anything True Blood has to offer. Now you’ll get to relive this acid trip of literature in a whole new way when Peter Evans reawaken’s Shakespeare’s masterpiece with a breathless 90-minute production that amplifies the magic, mirth and mayhem.
Based in modern day Greece, Evan’s The Dream the story stays true to the original’s pretzel-like love story but with a few catches – Bottom is actually Nick Bottom, a local tradie who, with some fellow handymen, are in the middle of rehearsing their own play when the proverbial love-shit begins to hitteth the faneth.
Peter Evans’ pared-back production will be as quick as a shadow. Fast, funny and family friendly, this is The Dream as you’ve never seen it before.
Peter Evans and Bell Shakespeare’s The Dream is on at the Canberra Theatre Centre from August 28 to September 13.
