Olive Harvest 2016

May 10, 2016  ·  2 min read

By Jemma Mrdak.

Did you know that olives were the symbol of peace to the ancient Greeks and that’s where the expression ‘to offer an olive branch’ comes from? I sure didn’t.

Apparently, there’s more to olives than we think. Olives have a long and distinguished history – the olive tree had its origin approximately 6,000 -7,000 years ago in the area equivalent to ancient Persia and Mesopotamia. The salty oval fruits were grown commercially in Crete as far back as 3000 BC. A single olive tree can live for over one thousand years. More power to the humble olive, it’s really stood the test of time.

In Australia, olives are sold on colour – either green or black, and they have a great supply of vitamin E and small amounts of other minerals and vitamins.

On Sunday May 29, the Olive Harvest Celebration for 2016 will be held at Grandma’s at the Farm in the Fedra Olive Grove Collector. We know you’re probably thinking what exactly does an Olive Harvest Celebration entail? Yep, so did we… please, carry on.
