This inaugural exhibition in the new NGA Contemporary features a selection of significant works from the National Gallery of Australia’s collection of 21st century Australian art. It includes some of Australia’s leading artists working across the country and internationally. The display includes all media—paintings, sculpture, prints, drawings, photography, video and the decorative arts.
The National Gallery of Australia has the largest collection of Australian art in the country, yet we can only show two per cent of the collection. In Stage 2 of the Gallery’s building redevelopment project, to be known as The Centre for Australian Art, it is the Gallery’s aspiration to create beautiful and expansive spaces to show the development of Australian art from the beginning of settlement to the present.
In the meantime, the Gallery will stage about four contemporary exhibitions of Australian art here each year, most of them themed. The National Gallery of Australia would like to express its appreciation to the National Capital Authority for providing this space as an annex to showcase the strength and wide variety of contemporary Australian works in the national collection which is always growing.
In close proximity to the Gallery, NGA Contemporary provides the public with increased access to the Gallery’s rich and diverse contemporary Australian art collection.
