The Canberra region is blessed with so many unique experiences. The National attractions, the Museums & Galleries, the major events from Floraide to Summernats and the ever-growing foodie experiences. But you have not experienced Canberra unless you visit Helm Wines and connect with winemaker Ken Helm.
Helm Wines was established in 1973 and was one of the first commercial wineries in the Canberra District Wine Region. The vineyard is located just outside of Murrumbateman, approximately 30km north of Canberra.
Ken and Judith Helm started the vineyard, winery and cellar door and it continues to be a family affair with all of the family playing an integral part in the business.
Helm Wines tasting room is the 1888 Toual Public School House which is listed by the National Trust and was the inspiration for the school bell featured on the wine label. It was once used for meetings of the Temperance League, where locals signed the pledge against alcohol.
The cool climate wine country near Canberra allows Helm Wines to produce unique styles of wines that you won’t find anywhere else in the world.
Ken’s flagship wines are Riesling and Cabernets.
In 2000 Ken instigated the Canberra International Riesling Challenge and his continuing role as chairman allows him to constantly keep abreast of new developments in Rieslings around the world.
