John Safran is coming to Canberra with his live show, Murder In Mississippi, the true story of how he met a white supremacist, befriended his black killer and wrote a book. Safran will read from his best-selling book, share tales of his escapades from the Deep South and screen never before seen footage from his mission.
Australia’s peerless exponent of gonzo film-making, John Safran was cruising American white supremacist websites one night only to stumble upon the news of the violent murder of a lifelong southern racist who he not only knew personally but had been sued by. Because he is John Safran he jumped on a plane, lived in Jackson, Mississippi for the best part of six months, plunged himself into FBI files, earned a killer’s trust and wrote a true crime novel.
Live on stage, Safran will take you deeper into his time in the South, telling the story on stage with film and photography from his six month immersion below the Mason Dixon. Murder In Mississippi is a tale of race, poverty, incarceration and the cultural fault lines that have defined the South since they found themselves on the losing side of the civil war. His book of the same name is on current release through Penguin and was named iBooks 2013 Best Non-Fiction.
