Joan Holt Exhibition

May 5, 2016  ·  2 min read

By Jemma Mrdak.

Have you ever felt that someone has been watching you? Reading your every move. Maybe there was, maybe it was artist Joan A. Holt (1926 – 2005), who painted hundreds of local Canberra residents over the years. The funny thing is, one of these artworks could be of you, as nearly all of them are still unidentified… Joan, you diabolical!

Despite working painting throughout her whole life, Joan Holt never actually held an exhibition or sold a painting, as she preferred to give away her portraits to their subjects, or let the artworks pile up in her studio.

This Saturday, May 4 will see the first ever exhibition of her artworks at the Googong Foreshore. It’s worth checking out… you might see yourself… or your mum… or a mate… or your bestie’s old man.

As well as up to 40 paintings displayed there will be one special portrait of Canberra Historian, Manning Clark going up for auction, with all proceeds going to The Cancer Support Group. As well as the exhibition/auction, this event is a book launch of the Joan Holt memoir.

This event is a celebration of Joan’s life and her art, as she painted Canberra for over two decades, mainly portraits of local Canberrans.

The Joan Holt event is on May 7, 2016 at Googong Foreshore Wool Shed. $8 entry, Children Under 16 Free.
