India Beaumont really is a Canberra It-Girl. The stunning blonde regularly features on the Instagram account of her label, Ida Faux Fur Fabrications: coffee in hand, sporting cool nonchalance or a glowing smile, a perfectly styled outfit and always – an Ida shawl or scarf. With her line capturing the attention of serious fashionistas – most recently Tash Sefton of TheyAllHateUs and a new venture on the horizon, we jumped at the opportunity to quiz India on all things fashion and style.

How did the idea for your label come about?

I saw a gap in the market. I wanted to provide an ethical option for women like me who love to wear fluff. While acrylic fur isn’t something new we meticulously source only the highest quality faux fur. Our fabric is so soft that it is often mistaken for the “real deal.” Unlike a lot of Australian fashion labels we source our fabric within Australia and manufacture locally – supporting Australian business is important to me.

How did you find the experience of studying at Whitehouse Institute of Design?

I absolutely loved Whitehouse, it was my happy place. We did so much drawing and cutting and pasting I felt like I was in Kindy again – if I wasn’t so busy these days with a toddler I’d go back and study something else just for fun! Whitehouse gave me the confidence and knowledge I needed to channel my “passion for fashion” into what has become Ida.

Where do you find inspiration for your designs?

All sorts of things inspire me. I have a large collection of fashion books and love to flick through them when I need a little inspo. I read Elle Australia religiously and frequently use Pinterest and Instagram. Colour is what inspires me the most and there is colour in everything. So I suppose anything and everything inspires me!

What does an average workday look like for you?

Every day is a juggling act between being a mother and being a business owner. Some days I juggle well but mostly I don’t. Luckily for me my toddler still naps in the day so I take that time to do research, chat with my suppliers and respond to emails. I spend the hours either side of the nap taking my son to the park, excising or grabbing a coffee.

If you could only wear one outfit for the rest of your life what would it be?

Active wear with Ida: the ultimate mummy attire if you ask me.

What’s your vision for Ida for the future?

AW17 will see the introduction of apparel. Although we are still in Winter 16 we are already working on coat samples for next year. Watch this space!

What is your favourite thing about having your own fashion label?

Seeing Ida worn by women on the street. It is so humbling and exciting and I don’t think I will ever stop getting a buzz from that.
