If you happen to be staying with us over during October and November, we recommend finding the time to head to Canberra Contemporary Art Space and see the latest photographic exhibition by Heike Qualitz, called Between Coming and Going which opens October 10 and will run until November 15.
Part of photography’s magic lies in its ability to capture moments in time; to manifest a visual pause within the dynamic flux of life. Susan Sontag even wrote of photography that “all photographs are memento mori. To take a photograph is to participate in another person’s (or thing’s) mortality, vulnerability, mutability. Precisely by slicing out this moment and freezing it, all photographs testify to time’s relentless melt.”
Between Coming and Going explores the element of movement and dimension of time within the frame of photography. Suspended in eternal loops in which simplicity and complexity are of equal value, these engagements draw on iconic motifs and the atomic nature of the scene before us. Connecting with transience to hold contemplative space through stillness, discrete narratives unfold.
Raised in Berlin but now based here in Canberra, Heike Qualits is a visual artist who has worked across a wide field of mediums including installation, sculpture and illustration.
Between Coming and Going by Heike Qualitz is showing at the Canberra Contemporary Art Space from October 10 until November 15.
