Hayden & Italian Cello

Apr 2, 2014  ·  1 min read

Australia Chamber Orchestra

This month the Australian Chamber Orchestra welcomes Italian cellist Giovanni Sollima to the concert hall, show-piecing Hayden’s C major cello concerto. The cellist’s Australian debut, Sollima will be joined by ACO artistic director and renowned violinist Richard Tongetti for an invigorating and exhilarating performance of what has been called one of the geatest cello pieces ever written, and a perfect showcase of Sollima’s passion and enthusiasm for performance.

Whilst we can’t claim to be classical music maestros, QT Canberra love anything that’s been given a quirky edge and has attitude to boot! Sollima is a bonafide cello supervirtuoso, who plays with the heart and spontaneity of a jazz musician and is part performance artist. Yoyo Ma, a legendary cellist himself and fellow Silk Road Ensemblist, once described how for Sollima, performance is not merely an end in itself, but a means of communicating with the world through extraordinary composition.
