We’ve discovered that Canberrans are lovers of fresh and local produce. We love the smell of fresh carrots, eggplant and spinach, we’re avid fans of all things organic, and don’t get us started about the ‘paddock to plate’ concept.
Thankfully, there are a variety of farmers markets that occur regularly throughout the Capital. However, be warned, the farmers markets are sort of like rival gangs in Canberra. You’ve got your Capital Region crew, Southside and Northside posses and the Fyshwick massive, and they’re all battling it out to recruit your allegiance to their high quality products.
So, if gangs and/or organic produce is is your bag baby, then here’s where you need to go
Capital Region Farmers Market
The Capital Region Farmers Market is the biggest farmers market in the Canberra region. Today, the Capital Region Farmers Market is managed by the not-for-profit Rotary Club of Hall, Canberra, and aims to provide customers with a large and diverse range of fresh farm and food produce straight from the paddock. They also provide an opportunity for customers to discuss with growers and learn about their produce. Expect to see over 100 stalls each week at these markets! You mustn’t leave these markets without purchasing one, two, or even three Bombolini Doughnuts – these are artisan custard filled doughnuts, that are oh so Instagram worthy!
Where: Flemington Road, Mitchell
When: Every Saturday 7.30 – 11.30am
Southside Farmers Market
The Southside Farmers Market is a village style market that boasts a fantastic range of seasonal and fresh produce from around 60 eager stallholders each week. Expect to find vegetables from Cowra, free range eggs from Tharwa, organic meat from Bombala, organic greens from Hall, as well as local breads, cooking sauces and condiments. There is also a large range of certified organic and biodynamic produce available. If you’re in need of a quick sweet stop after shopping, visit the lovely ladies at Greek Sweets – where you’ll find Baklava and Turkish delights.
Where: CIT Southside Campus, Phillip
When: Every Sunday morning from 8-11.30am
Northside UC Farmers Market
If you’re a Northside Uni Student, then we recommend you grab your weekly shop from the Northside UC Farmers Market. Expect to find over 25 stalls with a vast range of regional and seasonal produce including fruit, organic beef, goat, sheep and cow cheese, as well as vegetables, poultry, cherries, and local bakery treats.
Where: University of Canberra (in front of building 10)
When: Open from 2.30-5.30pm
Fyshwick Fresh Food Markets
The Fyshwick Fresh Food Market is one of Canberra’s oldest markets. These markets are staffed and run by local Canberrans and through shopping there, you will be supporting local communities and small business owners. The majority of the retail space is dedicated to the sale of fresh product including fruit, vegetables, seafood, and delicatessen and bakery goods. We recommend you visit Ziggys Market Fresh for your apples, as they are sourced from one of Australia’s largest and best apple growers. They also offer plenty of free slices, so you can try before you buy. There is also a health food shop for all you health nuts. Natural Living offers a massive range of health food products and discount vitamins, so you can grab your coconut oil and quinoa in bulk.
Where: 12 Dalby Street Fyshwick
When: Every Thursday – Sunday, 8am – 5.30pm
