Do Canberra Differently

Mar 28, 2018  ·  3 min read

We all know that Canberra is home to our nation’s Parliament, The National Gallery of Australia, The National Portrait Gallery, Lake Burley Griffin and many a bar and restaurant worth visiting. There certainly are many lovely ways to spend a day or night.

These spots are definitely worth visiting but sometimes you just want to do something a bit different; something a little out of the box.

Here are our top five picks for seeing a less familiar side of our Capital.

Explore the National Arboretum

While beautiful and picturesque, the National Arboretum also has a distinct purpose. It is dedicated to growing trees for conservation, scientific research and education. Wander the grounds and you’ll see what, in time, will be a home to 104 forests of rare, endangered and symbolic trees from Australia and around the world.

Fun fact: Two of the forests are nearly 100 years old.

Kayak the Canberra Wetlands

Lake Burley Griffin is quite a large expanse of water with exciting inlets, streams and estuaries. Kayak the lake and explore the wetland areas such as Jerrabomberra, to witness land and water-based animals in their natural habitat and see the beautiful surrounds.

Interesting fact: It’s been said that the Jerrabomberra Wetlands once housed the trench system that was used to train officers in trench warfare and bombing in preparation for World War 1.

Hunt for truffles in the hills

Head to The Truffle Farm in search of the ultimate truffle holy grail. Jayson and his trusty dogs will lead you on the truffle adventure of a lifetime. You will search for the elusive black truffle through a forest 4,000 thick of oak and hazelnut trees (and enjoy a taste if you find any). May the odds be ever in your favour!

Top tip: They also offer a delicious brunch and lunch so, if you fancy a feast after your hard work, make sure to factor this into your plans.

Try a horseback adventure

Located just 30 minutes from Canberra, between Murrumbateman and Gundaroo, Burnelee offers extraordinary horseback adventures across an expanse of 3500 acres of land. Experience the true Australian bushland, muster cattle and sheep and spot the native wildlife over the two-hour journey.

Need to know: There are horses to suit all ages and experience.

Climb Mount Ainslie

Hike, cycle or drive to the lookout on Mount Ainslie and take in the breathtaking views of Canberra. The trip up the mountain is beautiful and the scene itself is one not to be missed. Take your camera because it will be well worth a snap. Also keep an eye out for native flora and flora as it’s in abundance up there!

Interesting fact: History books claim that Walter Burley Griffin planned the city design from the vantage point of Mount Ainslie.
