As Canberra slowly and calmly crawls out of the winter months and into a Spring, it drops as a reminder that the hoppier days are on the horizon. Oh, did I say hoppy, I meant happy, but now you mention it, let us talk about craft beer in Canberra. As you look around at breweries in the Captial, you begin to discover all the hidden hop, barley and wheat magicians that make up the brew scene. Sure Melbourne and Sydney seem to have a new craft beer warehouse open up every week, that Young Henrys is a fine drop, but the Canberra locals give them a damn good run for their money. Come with me on a quick discovery of the breweries around town that are producing the goods, in terms of beer, food and of course, hoppy times.
BentSpoke Brewing Co.
21 taps pour the liquid gold in the space that BentSpoke have set up shop in. A microbrewery and taphouse, the team here will take you on an adventure through the seasonals, the one-offs and the regulars. Pulling focus on the IPA scene, after a couple of trips to the taps, you’ll see why these guys have been winning national awards. Top the ale’s with a menu made to be paired with beer, like the Philly Cheesesteak and you have yourself food and brew coma.A post shared by BentSpoke Brewing Co. (@bentspoke_brewery) on
Capital Brewing Co.
Having worked around Canberra together, Tom Hertel and Laurence Kain were in the US four years ago, when they decided to get serious about crafting beers. They met a dude by the name Wade Hurtley in California, turns out Wade knows his way around brewing a fine drop and is now the Capital Brewing Co, Head Brewer. The beers have unique Australian taste with a kick of that West Coast Califonia flavour. Available in all respectable bottle shops, currently in cans, bottles to drop sometime before the new year.
