Big sounds from big bands by big boys – that’s the only way we can think of describing the fanfare that will be The Cat Empire as they play the UC Refectory for two nights on Friday and Saturday, 17-18 October.
A local and international favourite on the festival music scene, The Cat Empire have been entertaining the ears of music lovers since their break through moment way back when with the release of their self-titled album in 2003. Since then, they have been bringing jazz, ska and a whole number of eclectic audio experiences to the stage.
The band’s fifth album, Steal The Light, was released on 17 May 2013 and their worldwide “Steal the Light Tour” was announced shortly afterwards.
Since then, the band has toured across US throughout late 2013, supported by Blackalicious and, for some of the American dates, were joined by fellow Australians Tinpan Orange. Now, they’re back home soil where they will be teaming up with Madre Monte, featuring Hard hitting horns funkin’ up 50s style Cumbia, a tight rhythm section dissecting Afro-Colombian progressions, skankin’ guitars infusing reggae grooves, and a front man recreating the ancient mythological stories of Colombia, all intertwining to create a unique 9-piece Latin Reggae outfit. Prepare to be blown away. Oh, and maybe pack some ear-buds.
The Cat Empire is coming to Canberra to play the UC Refectory for two nights on Friday and Saturday, 17-18 October.
