Brunches Worth Getting Out of Bed For

Jun 1, 2017  ·  4 min read

words by annie brown

It is no revelation to agree that brunch in this town is a big deal. I, for one, delight in getting up at a leisurely pace on a weekend morn, get into my active gear (this one may or may not be true) and wonder which of the innumerable cafes I will sample, usually after a quick google of the menu so I know exactly what I am having before I have even arrived (you too? Great).

The eating of said breakfast delight is the easy part, deciding on where to have it is the hard bit. We are absolutely spoiled for quality and choice in Canberra- there is still a list a mile long of breakfast haunts I want to try, let alone making my way through all the menu items in each locale I absolutely must sample.

Though there are some dishes that I have sampled and must mention; it is my duty as a Canberran to inform and these are just too good to keep secret.

Ona on the Lawns
The newly revamped Ona in Manuka is light, airy and despite this, very cosy in the cooler weather. It’s generally pretty packed but once you’re seated, it is worth it. Treat yourself to the ‘Avocado’- avocado half, smoked goats curd, native dukkha, baby beetroot, snow pea tendrils, ancient grain sourdough, with the option of adding two poached eggs. I did, in fact, I added a side of bacon too, and boy was it delicious.

The Cupping Room
Ona’s sibling in the city. The Cupping Room is a fail-safe for a winning breaky. Quirky décor with a fresh feel, this place is always popular. Nothing quite gets me out of bed like the allure of French toast and The Cupping Room has nailed the brief- Brioche, bruleed banana, strawberry, peanut brittle, yoghurt cream, mascarpone and chocolate soil. Drool.

Rye Café & Bar
Scandinavia is having a moment right now- in architecture, philosophy and food. Not surprising really, when you enter Rye Café & Bar in Braddon that has a distinct feel of Scandi-chic, with pared back décor and a fresh menu that makes you dream of colder climes. Try the RYE breakfast board: Charred ruby grapefruit, toasted rye sourdough, Pepe Saya butter, citrus jam with hard cheese and a boiled egg. Refreshing, in more ways than one.

QT Canberra Interactive Marketplace
Nothing will get me out of bed faster on holidays than the lure of a hotel breakfast. Heading down at 9.45am with bleary eyes to fuel up for the day. Now, some hotel breakfasts are distinctly underwhelming but I can confidently declare that what is on offer at QT Canberra is a real treat. For the health conscious we have little pots of bircher or yoghurt and fruit, green smoothies, fresh juices, smoked salmon, avocado and goats cheese…my oh my, the options are endless. If you would like to indulge, there are freshly made chocolate croissants and pastries, omelettes made to order, meats and cheeses, and all the delicious accoutrements of a hot breakfast you could wish for. Holidays or not, get on down- this breakfast bonanza is available every day of the week.
