Augmented Reality in Canberra

Jul 28, 2016  ·  2 min read

By Ashleigh Went.

Pokemon Go – love it or hate it, one thing is for certain: Pokemania is spreading like wildfire, and augmented reality is now well and truly ‘a thing’. Here are 5 ways to get your AR fix in the Capital.

The National Arboretum

The National Arboretum app uses your phone or tablet’s camera and GPS system to track where you are in the 100+ forests, and then displays the native animals from that area. The clever Canberran folk behind the app, APositive even incorporated sounds – so while you’re meandering through the Himalayan cedar forest, you might catch the sounds of chanting monks. Wicked! The Arboretum undisputedly has some of Canberra’s best views – so snap some pics for Insta while you’re at it.

The National Museum

The Kspace program at the National Museum has been around since I was a kid, but it’s recently received a pretty impressive AR makeover. Here’s how it works: you download the Kspace AR Trail app and search for the special AR markers around the museum. View them using the app and watch characters spring to life! You can also print off the markers and play from home. This is a great one for the little tackers.
