Jess Cochrane: After My Own Heart

Have you ever looked at piece of art and felt truly connected?

Jess Cochrane has resonated with women around the world through her art – challenging preconceptions about beauty by blurring the line between pretty and grotesque.

Jess’ work takes an intimate look inside the manifesto that is self-perception, challenging the facts that make women so critical about their self-image. Having experienced severe anxiety and depression throughout her life, she wanted to confront her experiences in a way that would shed light upon a bigger picture that women face in today’s society.

THE GOODEST ASSISTANT EVER

“My work for the most part is me taking images and using my brush to interrogate the construct of beauty and the boundaries that it creates for womanhood as well as questioning the culture of women interacting with beauty in a narcissistic and self-deprecating way. It’s a conscious effort on my part to tear down a hegemonic culture of one form of beauty and creating one that leaves space for beauty to be honest and soft and powerful and raw and violent, all whilst being all-inclusive.”
