Think of a pair of sharp skates and freshly groomed ice rink and the first thing that springs to mind might be the “Quack! Quack! Quack!” chant from the inspirational 90s’ classic, The Mighty Ducks. For others, it may be the ludicrousness of Blades of Glory or it perhaps John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale in the incredibly cheesy final scene of Serendipity.
For those not sure, don’t worry – we’re being treated to an icy playground for a month over winter when the Wellington Ice Rink and Ice Slide returns to Wellington – so you’ll have a chance to find out.
In what has to be 2017’s most self-explanatory name, the Wellington Ice Rink and Ice Slide event brings a fully covered ice rink and double lane, 35m ice slide to Odlins Plaza, overlooking Wellington Harbour.
Whether a pro skater or slow skater, the frozen festival accommodates for everyone. There are the following themed daytime (10am – 1pm) weekend events for young and old:
- Winter Wonderland – July 8-9
- Cars 3 Weekend – July 15-16
- Ice Carnival Weekend – July 22-23
- Ice Fairies and Pirates Weekend – July 29-30
- Frozen Fluro Finale – Aug 5-6
And for those looking to get their twilight skate and slide on, there’s the following ice-covered party nights:
- Student Skate Night – July 12
- Fro Back Thursdays Retro Nights – July 13
- DJ on Ice – July 14
- Disco Dance Party – July 15
- Laser Ice Rave – July 22
- Mexican Night – July 29
- Full Moon Party – August 5
Channel your inner Goldberg the goalie, Chazz Michael Michaels or Sara Thomas, and hit the ice.
The Wellington Ice Rink and Ice Slide will be open at Odlins Plaza, a short 4-minute walk from QT Museum Wellington, from July 8 – August 6, 2017.
