Wellington Easter Thrills and Fills

Wellingtonians love a long weekend getaway, but we reckon our little capital is brimming with surprises and delights that should keep you right here. We’ve sussed out all the top happenings from Friday to Monday, with minimal travel time.

Waterbourne

Welly Harbour is welcoming New Zealand’s premier extreme water-sports event. Waterbourne is a three-day competition with national-level races in kitesurfing, windsurfing, and stand-up paddle boarding.

The festivities kick off with a Beach Party on Saturday the 31st of March at Eastbourne’s Bishop Park with live music acts, food, drinks and market stalls. It begins at 1pm and continues into the night, accompanied by the beats of Dick Johnson and Laughton Kora.

Waterbourne then continues with the New Zealand Slalom Windsurfing Nationals, the Kite Big Air Nationals, the Waterbourne Ocean Clash, and the Paddle for Hope for charity.

Professional kitesurfer Marc Jacobs says he can’t think of a better place in New Zealand to hold Waterbourne and the Kite Big Air Nationals. Jacobs says, “It’s great to have the Kite Big Air Nationals held in the windiest place in the country this year.”

Hang Ten … Kinda?

The Library presents DRINKING CHOCOLATE

This Easter, The Library is serving up the goods that hit that sweet spot of nostalgia with a selection of Easter cocktails inspired by NZ’s favourite snacks.

Cosy up with something ‘Soft, Hot & Crunchie’ (don’t mind if we do), think honeyed L’affare hot chocolate spiked with Gusto Coffee bean infused vodka garnished with Carello hokey pokey gelato.

Sip and salute the sweet and the last batch of Pineapple Lumps rolling off the Kiwi factory line before it’s new life in Oz, try ‘One Pineapple, or two?’. We’re digging the fresh pineapple shaken with house-spiced rum and pineapple orgeat with a milk chocolate foam.

Wellington Armageddon Expo 2018

Get your geek on this Easter Weekend with #WELLYGEDDON 2018. The annual Armageddon Expo returns to Westpac Stadium for a family-friendly opportunity to revel in the latest in gaming, film and television, anime, cosplay and comics – complete with celebs guests.

We’re talking Jeremy Renner, the talent from The Avengers franchise and The Bourne Legacy, up close and in the flesh. If you’re more fond of the undead, catch Aly Michalka from Aly & AJ fame, and more recently of iZombie screen status. For the art fanatics out there, Comic Artist cited as Penciller, Colorist, Inker for DC’s
Batman: Gotham Knights, Al Barrionuevo himself and his work will be available for close encounters.

Go on, take in the epic displays of pop culture awesomeness.
