There is a place not far from us here at QT Museum Wellington, a place where up and coming art and culture is supported in its infancy. There is something about a theatre that champions the local talent that hits us right in the feels while causing a great deal of excitement. So much so, that looking over the upcoming shows for October, we got a little flustered and had to share all the goods that will be taking to the stage. October is the time for The New Zealand Improv Festival to come to town and that’s exactly what they’ve done.
So from us to you, here’s a quick highlight reel of what you should catch at BATS Theatre this month:
Late Night Knife Fight
Three teams, one winner. It’s a dog eat dog world out there and on stage. Three improv teams go head to head with the winner declared by you, the audience. The winning team gets to come on back next month and fight for their pride.
Saturday, October 14 – tickets HEREThe Restaurant
The idea that no matter the issue, it can all be worked out over a good meal rings true, for the most part. This piece plays out an improvised story around a dinner table with each guest bringing their own luggage. This will be a dinner party that you’ll want a seat at.
Tuesday, October 17 – ticket HERE#hashtag
This piece is all about you and your social media, with trending topics brought to life. This spontaneous piece of improv will test those on stage as they respond to your tweeted hashtags. It’ll be fast-paced and hectic, but far from boring making it a must-see for those fans of improv.
Wednesday, October 18 – tickets HEREShibuya Scramble Crossing
If you’ve ever been to Japan, then you know how busy the Shibuya intersection can be with 500,000 people making it across the main intersection a day. The Scramble will tell the tales born in the place that many come and go.
Thursday, October 19 – tickets HEREDon’t See This Show Alone
Don’t judge a book by its cover, though the Improv Festival team do urge you to bring someone along to this little piece of fright. From what is being said, this show is complex and plays with your fears, while asking ‘are you brave enough to see your fears come to life?‘… Spooked, considering the month.
