The Best Waffles in Wellington

May 11, 2017  ·  2 min read

words by niall roeder

Besides boasting expert espresso and beautiful craft beer, Wellington has the best waffles in New Zealand.

Who doesn’t love those, checkered dough plates that Belgians are apparently so fond of? Douse waffles in cream, compote, whipped butter, syrup, bacon and fried chicken, and serve them up. Yes, fried chicken. It’s a thing and it’s bloody delicious.

Wellington is well aware of how good waffles are. The vast amount of waffle houses, waffle mongers and waffles dispensaries found about town are a testament to this fact. And we, for one, are all for it.

We look at where to get the best waffles in wellington.

Sweet Mother’s Kitchen
With a menu peppered with New Orleans’ Cajun and Creole-inspired dishes, Sweet Mother’s Kitchen doesn’t make ordering easy, but take our word for it – the waffles are mean. They offer waffles with berry compote, ricotta and syrup, however the winner is the waffles with fried chicken and syrup. Forget all preconceived notions of clashing flavours and break it down – sweet maple syrup, salty buttermilk chicken, crunchy waffle – the flavours match.

The Little Waffle Shop
They claim to be the cutest little waffle shop in town and to be completely honest, they’re right – they’re the darling of the Wellington waffle world and they run their social media like they make their waffles – expertly. Consistently at the forefront of sweet wafflery, The Little Waffle Shop delivers a cutting-edge Waffle of the Week, giving waffle-lovers the chance to taste experiments like the Spicy Sanchez – gluten and dairy free waffles, dusted with cinnamon and chilli sugar, drizzled with homemade coffee syrup and sprinkled with dark chocolate chips.

Loretta’s
The sister restaurant to Floraditas, Loretta’s brings the fancy – their waffles are served with elderflower lemon syrup, blueberries and toasted poppy seeds. You can continue to pimp your waffles with added coconut yoghurt and bacon, which we highly recommend.
