Adventure Guide to Wellington

Oct 24, 2017  ·  3 min read

Sure, Welly ain’t no Queenstown.

It’s not teaming with stomach-in-your-mouth activities.

Though, that being said, the capital does hold its own type of adventure that gives you a thrill without the immediate fear of death.

From exploring the marine parks off the coast to remote picnic spots only accessible by a private helicopter, Welly has something for all your adventuring needs.

Here’s our guide to your next thrill-seeking trip to the Kiwi capital:

Water

Harbour Sails

There is something about the yachtie way of life where everyone’s welcome. It’s a very New Zealand thing as well, so if you’re looking for a cultural injection with some great captains and sweet boats, then make your way down to Harbour Sails on Friday, Saturday or Sunday to do just that. Given the winds around the city, the sail will be fast paced and if you’re new to the game, you’ll learn some handy tips, rather quickly. No experience needed. Just enjoy the rush!

Dive HMNZS

Back in 1982, F69 Frigate Wellington joined the Royal New Zealand Navy. In 1999 she was decommissioned and then in 2005, the vessel was scuttled off Island Bay to create an artificial marine reef and an incredible dive site. Now laying at 21 metres under the sea the Frigate is a thriving piece of aquaculture. The team over at Dive Wellington will get you kitted out and under the water in no time. As it is deep, this one is for those who hold a dive certificate. Though you could always book in for the whole course and get yourself certified.

Mountain

Adrenalin Forest

There is something like 2kms+ of ropes to be tackled at the Adrenalin Forest, getting you over 40 metres above the ground – secured to the course with two, very tough clips. Flying foxes to cargo nets, this course will leave you shook, but with that feeling of accomplishment, you know the one you get after messing about with vertigo?

Quad Bike Expeditions

To start out, the Quad Bike team will take you 45 minutes out of the city to where the mountains meet the sea. Here they’ll get you sorted with a bike and all the safety gear. From one hour, half day, full day and overnight tours, these cats will have you feeling like you’re exploring undiscovered parts of New Zealand. It’s truly something.

Air

Hot Air Ballooning

The Wairarapa region is on the East Coast of the North Island, just a little drive outside of Wellington. Here you’ll find mountains that are untouched and sunrises that will move the soul. Now the best way to experience the this is with the gentle thrill of a basket attached to a balloon with hot air. It’s the adrenaline type that matches the early wake-up call for pre-sunrise take-off.

Helicopter Picnics

Lastly, why not schedule in time for a picnic. In a place that is only accessible by helicopter. The team at Kapiti Helworx know the area like the back of their hand and have a number of special places to offer you. They’ll sort you out with a hamper, get your heli sorted, take you up for a quick joy ride and then drop you at a secluded spot for lunch and leave you in peace. When you’re ready, they’ll be back to collect you. Perfect.
