Where to get your pasty fix in Melbourne – hitting the sweet spot in the culinary capital
Melbourne’s sweet tooths and sugar seekers are spoilt for choice when it comes to hot spots dishing out lashings of pastry love; but like any good addict, you need to know where to get your fix. Keep these places in mind for next time you need a hit of nature’s sweet nectar.Lune Croissanterie
Australia’s prized darling of the pastry world (we are talking global rep here, folks), Lune Croissanterie is headed up by Kate Reid, who trained in Paris and has made headlines for her perfect, buttery rolls of goodness. Handmade each day with oodles of love and devotion (she calls them her children), this place attracts daily morning lines so you ought to get there early if you want to taste one of her babies.
119 Rose Street, FitzroyGontran Cherrier
Another stalwart of the north, Gontran Cherrier’s eponymous bakery on Smith Street was the celebrity boulanger’s 27th store worldwide and Australia’s first. Melbourne got lucky again. Using ‘proper’ butter (yes, there is such a thing) and his favourite flour imported from France, top picks off the pastry menu here include pain au chocolat, apple turnover and pear and hazelnut tart.
140 Smith Street, CollingwoodQT Melbourne Cake Shop
Smack-bang in the middle of the city is the QT Melbourne Cake Shop, a little sweet stop on the ground floor tempting people as they are welcomed through the designer doors. Each artisan treat displayed here is created by the talented patisserie team at Pascal Bar & Grill and will do any weary traveller or cake connoisseur a world of good.
133 Russell St, MelbourneFrench Fantasies
South siders, the veteran bakers at French Fantasies have got you covered. All the French clichés exist here, but who’s complaining? Lavish éclairs, mille-feuilles and macarons – some even say they produce the best chocolate croissants in Melbourne. Well, if that’s not enough…
15 Toorak Road, South YarraTivoli Road Bakery
If you haven’t tried the doughnuts at Tivoli Road, you haven’t lived. Famed for their fun-filled rolls of dough thanks to creative flavours such as salted caramel and crème brulée, Tivoli Road is one of the city’s most loved bakeries. Even Attica’s Ben Shewry agrees, saying of Tivoli’s founder: “Michael James would never tell you he is one of the greatest bakers of his generation, that would be my role to tell you”. That’s a good enough endorsement for us.
