Old Masters: Australia’s Great Bark Artists

Apr 2, 2014  ·  1 min read

National Museum of Australia

Showcasing 122 bark paintings from 40 master bark painters, the Old Masters exhibition is the largest bark painting collection in the world. The exhibition features works from Narritjin Maymuru, Yirawala, Mawalan Marika and their contemporaries, many of whom were cultural leaders and statesmen who forged a new place for the old traditions of Aboriginal art-making in the contemporary scene. The exhibition highlights the stylistic differences between the Western, Eastern and Central regions of Arnhem Land, the subject matter of which ranges from impressions of the ancestral realm, to questions of identity, and representations of contemporary life.
