Finding Your Place in the World: Asian Photomedia

A selection of work by artists from South and Southeast Asia, the Finding Your Place In the World collection has been a pet project for the Gallery, whose photography collection, until now, has contained less than two hundred photos from anywhere in Asia.

Featuring works by prominent members of their respective communities, the collection’s curators sought out artists who made comment on the effect of change in their countries; those which have undergone fundamental transformations in the last century: Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Tibet and India. And, for the majority the artists and their works, the artistic examinations of the transformative social issues and national histories have tapped into themes of identity, loss and resilience at both a personal and cultural level – well worth checking out for a thoughtful and particular insight into the interception of the personal, the political and the national.
